From January 19th through January 29th Hollywood invaded the sleeping resort town of Park City Utah, or more precisely 50,000 people descended en mass to check out the highest profile film fest this side of Cannes. Sundance receives more coverage than you can imagine. You can’t walk five feet without seeing some form of news correspondent filming there piece on the fest, and it’s not just the US, Sundance is truly a multicultural, multinational gathering to celebrate both cinema and the young independent voice. For the first timer who is used to the nonstop media barrage from the likes of Access Hollywood and E! entertainments of the world that hype the city Ad nauseum, Upon arrival there is a good chance that you are going to be in for a shock. The hustle and the bustle during the day is kept to a minimum, Screenings start at 8:30 am with every night showcasing a midnight screening, which means during the day the biggest crowd you are likely to find is the lineup for the bus system or for parking (They shut down all main street parking). What Park City truly has if you are looking to mingle within the Entertainment Industry is the Night Life, Major corporate sponsors shell out huge dollars to throw elaborate bashes and bring in A list talent. The darker the night sky becomes the more likely you are to notice the crowds gathering, it’s as if the sleepy town is overrun by Vampires, albeit drunken rambling Vampires who passed on going to Las Vegas and decided instead to head to Utah for ten days.
The parties and talent that the corporate sponsors bring in is unparalleled; Microsofts Bing Bar featured the likes of Jason Mraz, The Civil Wars, Cobra Starship, Drake, Quincy Jones and Asher Roth. SkullCandy and Bandpage created the Compound which hosted ?uestlove, DJ James Murphy. Ken Jordan and Scott Kirkland better known as “The Crystal Method” and Lil Jon while bring in the likes of Woody Harelson and Michael Cera. To celebrate the release of “A Celebration of Music in Film” lucky individuals were treated to sets by ICE-T and Chuck D of Public Enemy Fame. Sundance and Grey Goose brought Paul Simon to the longstanding ICONOCLAST series. To announce the creation of their production company Living Breathing films Corey Taylor (front man) and M. Shawn Crahan (Percussionist) both of famed, groundbreaking Metal outfit Slipknot performed and acoustic show. In addition to all of these events Eddie Izzard performed a show and Ben Stiller participated in a panel discussion for the 20th anniversary of his directorial debut “Reality Bites” which debuted at Sundance.
The fest however isn’t just a giant party in fact that isn’t even the focus of it (Although opening weekend many might beg to differ). The 10 day festival is meant to highlight the voice of independent film which means major power players swoop into town to find the next Reservoir Dogs, Blair Witch, Clerks, Precious, Garden State, Napoleon Dynamite, Saw etc..
The Following were all acquired during the festival, ATO (Shadow Dancer),CBS Films (The Words)Entertainment One (Wish You Were Here),Focus Features (For a Good Time Call…),Fox Searchlight (The Surrogate, Beasts of the Southern Wild),IFC Films (Simon Killer, Liberal Arts),IFC Midnight (The Pact),Indomina (Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap),LD Distribution (Black Rock),Lionsgate Films/Roadside Attractions (Arbitrage),Magnolia Pictures (The Queen of Versailles, 2 Days in New York, Compliance, Nobody Walks),Magnolia/Magnet (V/H/S),Millennium (Red Lights),Sony Pictures Classics (Searching for Sugar Man, Celeste and Jesse Forever),Sony Pictures Worldwide (Robot and Frank),Sundance Selects (How to Survive a Plague)
The odds are long with thousands of films being submitted that you will even get into Sundance, just being accepted into the fest should make you feel like a winner, but to get the film that you have invested so much time and effort into getting picked up for distribution is akin to winning the lottery.
As with all festivals Sundance wraps everything up with an awards ceremony with 2012 being hosted by indie stalwart Parker Posey (It seems that there is an award for just about everyone).
The Grand Jury Prize: Documentary was presented by Charles Ferguson for The House I Live In
The Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic was presented by Justin Lin for Beasts of the Southern Wild
The World Cinema Jury Prize: Documentary was presented by Nick Fraser for The Law in These Parts

Overall the 2012 Sundance Film Festival presented 117 feature-length films, representing 30 countries by 45 first-time filmmakers, including 24 in competition. These films were selected from 4,042 feature-length film submissions composed of 2,059 U.S. and 1,983 international feature-length films. 91 films at the Festival were world premieres. The Short Film Program was comprised of 64 short films selected from a record 7,675 submissions.
The combination of being able to see tomorrows blockbuster months before a theatrical release, the chance to hobnob with Actors and the chance to get into a first rate party (Chances are though, if you’re not on the guest list, you won’t get in) all come together in eclectic stew to make Sundance the king of Film Festivals, while Robert Redford would prefer for the festival to go back to its roots and just focus on the films it’s the whole package that builds the Park City myth.
