A Perfect Getaway
Starring:
Steve Zahn, Timothy Olyphant, Milla Jovovich and Kiele Sanchez
Director: David Twohy
Genre: Thriller
Rated: R

A newlywed couple on their honeymoon in Hawaii finds out that there is a Man and Woman killing honeymooners; meanwhile they meet two different couples they suspect could be the killers.

Cliff (Steve Zahn) and Cydney (Milla Jovovich) are a newlywed couple hiking the Napali Coast to reach a secluded beach. On the way to the trail they stop to pick pick up hitchhikers Cleo (Marley Shelton) and Kale (Chris Hensworth) another pair of newlyweds that recently left Oahu (where the murders took place) and are heading to the same spot as Cliff and Cydney, after an odd encounter they don’t pick up Cleo and Kale and soon suspect them of being the murders. Once on the trail they meet Nick( Timothy Olyphant) and Gina (Kiele Sanchez) another couple who recently left Oahu and could be the killers as well.

Timothy Olyphant who should be a bigger star by now stands out as the scenery chewing Nick, A former military man with a enough crazy stories to make Cliff and Cydney doubt there validity and a penchant for saying outstanding. Cliff is a screenwriter and his conversations with Nick are great they discuss plot devices such as a red herring while the film throws you a red herring.

Getaway never takes itself too seriously yet finds just the right balance between thrilling and fun. It has a great visual style and a twist that although it isn’t entirely too hard to figure out keeps you enthralled as to what is going to happen next. The scenery and the solitude of the island provide a perfect backdrop for this thriller (Puerto Rico is an excellent fill in for the island of Kauai). It’s a great end of summer treat that unfortunately will get overlooked due to overhyped drivel like GI JOE.
