Colombiana – Review
Rated: PG-13
Directed by: Olivier Megaton
A young girl witnesses the murder of her parents and chooses to become an assassin to ultimately get revenge on the killers
Zoe Saldana (Avatar, Star Trek) stars as Cataleya Restrepo a young Columbian girl who after witnessing the murder of her parents escapes to Chicago to be raised by her uncle Emilio (Cliff Curtis); under Emilio’s tutelage Cataleya learns the craft to become an assassin. Fifteen years later Cataleya is performing hits and leaving her calling card of a lipstick drawn Cataleya Lilly on her victim’s chests, drawing the attention of the FBI and ultimately the attention of those responsible for her parent’s deaths.
Saldana easily steps into Jason Statham territory with female flair, displaying equal parts Stone Cold Killer and Sexual Vixen. Saldana is one minute sensually dancing in a tank top and panties and the next minute blowing up a wall with C4 and both are equally entertaining. Typically when there is a female lead in an action film it’s completely ridiculous with a lot of hand to hand combat, taking just a couple of punches for the guy to get knocked out. While the woman can somehow take a punch and shrug it off (Scarlett Johansson in Iron Man). Saldana utilizes stealth and weaponry to dispose of her victims like a modern day ninja. There is some hand to hand combat but dealt with in a more realistic way. Intermixed between hits is some light emotional weight on family and relationships but this is truly a revenge flick. Cataleya’s relationship with Danny (Michael Vartan) is nothing more than a chance for Saldana to where little clothing and move the story forward.
At the end of the day Colombiana is solid little action flick with good entertainment value and enough scantily clad Saldana to keep things moving along.
Grade- 81
