Oz: The Great and Powerful – We’re off to see the Wizard and his discovery of Oz

For over 100 years L. Frank Baum’s series of Oz novels have inspired, captivated and bewitched generations and now the origins of the great and powerful wizard will be displayed on the big screen. In March 2013, Disney’s Oz: The Great and Powerful will tell the story of changing fortunes and combating evil, whilst illustrating in true Joe Roth (producer of Alice in Wonderland) style that anything is possible.

From the award winning director, Sam Raimi comes one blockbuster that is set to dominate next spring. Focussing on Oz’s origins, Disney’s Oz:  The Great and Powerful is Raimi’s first big budget film since Spider-Man 3 in 2007, which can be reflected in the stellar casting.

James Franco plays Oscar Diggs, a small time magician based in Kansas who dreams if a bigger and brighter future. After flying into the eye of a hurricane, Oscar finds himself in the magical Land of Oz where everyone believes that he is the great wizard that they have been waiting for. Everyone but the three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams). Forced to put his magical talents to practice through the art of illusion and his ingenuity, Oz must discover who is good and who is evil before the Land of Oz turns on itself, and in doing so transforms into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz.

Sam Raimi has returned to his director status to offer viewers an insight into the life of Oz and proving once more why his considered to be one of the most promising and talented directors in the industry. The same can be said of his counterpart Joe Roth, producer of Alice in Wonderland. However, the world that he created and his vision made for some very attractive cinematography – something that we expect to see once more in this film.

If the talent behind the camera isn’t enough to spark intrigue the cast is sure to have you giddy with excitement, showcasing some of the biggest names Hollywood has produced. James Franco travels from the Planet of the Apes to the Land of Oz, Rachel Weisz transforms from a doctor (The Bourne Legacy) into a witch, Mila Kunis changes her focus from mastering ballet to practising witchcraft and Michelle Williams uses the innocence of Marilyn to become the Good Witch.

The release of Oz: The Great and Powerful is sure to become one of the biggest blockbusters for 2013.
