Immortals Review and Mickey Rourke Interview
Starring: Henry Cavill, Mickey Rourke, Frida Pinto, Stephen Dorff, John Hurt
Rated: R
Directed by: Tarsem Singh
From the Production team that brought us 300 and Director Tarsem Singh (The Cell, The Fall) bring us another tale inspired by Greek Mythology, This time in 3D.
Theseus(Henry Cavill) is handpicked by Zeus(Luke Evans) to lead the fight against King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) and stop him before he can find the Epirus Bow and wield its power to unleash the Titans imprisoned in Mount Tartaros, all in hopes of destroying the Gods of Mount Olympus.
I don’t think it’s possible or in fact even allowed to mention the name Tarsem Singh without using the words “Visionary Director”. A reputation that Tarsem has rightfully earned with his ability to harness his own distinct style. Tarsem is one of the few directors that knows the look and style he wants to employ at the onset of pre production for Immortals the inspiration was Italian artist Carravaggio, particularly his dramatic use of lighting. Where sing truly shines though is not just in the visual aspect it’s in the utilization of 3D, There is a particularly head crushing scene of delight where Aries (Daniel Sharman) comes down from Olympus to deliver a Godly beating. Another highlight is Singhs ability to showcase the gorgeous Frida Pinto rather than strictly shiny and glistening man Abs.
Cavill brings enough to Theseus to make you realize why he was cast as the superman and Rourke brings his typical Rourke and Roll to the Evil King Hyperion.
Immortals is the ultimate 3D fanboy movie, a film made for a specific audience. You are not going to see this for the acting you’re going for the visual spectacle, A highly violent visual spectacle with some of the coolest 3D caught on film. If there ever was a film made for the coveted 18-34 male audience Immortals is it. This is the Anti Twilight.
Grade- 86
While at the Junket there was one Actor who stood out, of course that would be Mickey Rourke, while everyone else takes themselves way to seriously and carefully measure their words, Rourke comes at you fast and loose, He never takes himself too seriously and is very quick. Most of what Rourke says is delivered as a joke never being rude or malicious although taken out of context people might think that. The guy really is a class act.
When asked if a mythology story ever stood out for him.
“You ever see the mythology porno Johnny Fuck her faster? About a king with a big dick.”
“When asked about Director Tarsem Singh”
Tarsem, When I saw his commercial reel I go this mother fucker can shoot. You know, So he can protect me, so if I work really hard, If I work really hard he’s gonna make me look good, and if I don’t work to hard he’s still gonna make me look good. So I like that you know.
When asked about the actresses in the film
“Frida is great and Frida is a very good actress, I got a lot of respect for her as an actress but most of all what I like about Frida is she is really a nice person, I don’t like most actresses I think there cunts and I will say that with a K, but Frida is a really good person.”
When asked about his Legacy
“I am not interested in my legacy, when you’re dead your dead I don’t give a fuck, I will be up in heaven hopefully.”
In regards to up and coming actors
“I think there are better actors coming out of the UK and Australia who do we got here? Ryan Gosling and Shia Lebouf? (That was a joke)”
When asked what he wants from Acting at this point in his career,
“Mainly I say please god let me not be late for work, So I won’t be out of work another 13 years”.
