This Prequel to Star Trek follows the early years of the crew of the U.S.S Enterprise. Starting with the birth of Kirk, his time at Starfleet and the maiden voyage of the enterprise, As they battle Rogue Romulan Captain Nero (Eric Bana)

First off I would like to say that I am not a Star Trek fan and never have been, I have seen the movies and the TV show but was never overly impressed particularly with the movies.  I have also never been a big  J.J Abrams fan, I would gladly take a pass on everything he has done Felicity, Alias, Lost , MI3, I have not really enjoyed any of it, Yet somehow in spite of all of this I loved Star Trek. The beauty of this Star Trek is that you don’t need to know anything about Star Trek to enjoy it. From getting to see the history of Kirk to the early days of Spock you can walk into this without knowing or caring about Star Trek the slightest yet walk out thoroughly pleased.  The story involves Time Travel, Black Holes and Alternate Realities so I am not going to go into details on that, as not to spoil anything.  Chris Pine is fantastic as Kirk giving us everything we loved about Shatner’s original from his reckless go with his gut mentality to his penchant for hooking up with female Aliens. Zachary Quinto is also dead on as Spock offering a crowd pleasing interpretation of the famed Vulcan, we are also given insight into the internal conflicts of Spock’s Logic vs. Emotion mentality. The love Triangle between Kirk, Spock and Ohura(Zoe Saldana) is also a great source of Amusement and brings some of the best moments. Karl Urban as “Bones” brings enough freshness to the character yet at the same time channels just enough of Deforest Kelley to please even the most avid Trekkie, the always fantastic Simon Pegg does the same as the famed engineer Scottie.

The Essence of Star Trek is completely captured here yet at the same time it never seems dated. Star Trek is always engaging, very fun and extremely enjoyable, The Plot is sophisticated enough to make you think but not overly so where you are confused. It is Great Fun, with Spectacular action sequences and special effects with just the right touch of humor and heart. I walked in less than interested and walked out a fan of both Star Trek and J.J Abrams. Now if only J.J could give the same treatment to the last three star wars movies.
