The Haunting in Connecticut

Starring:

Virginia Madsen, Kyle Gallner, Elias Koteas, Amanda Crew

Genre: Horror/Thriller

Rated: PG-13

The Haunting in Connecticut is based on the true events of the Campbell family. The Campbell’s have a son who is getting experimental treatment for cancer; Due to this treatment he is exhausted and they look to find a home that is closer to the hospital. The Campbell’s find what they believe to be the perfect home; unfortunately this home has a past that makes it less than ideal.

Sara Campbell (Virginia Madsen) just wants her son Matt (Kyle Gallner) to not suffer the long drives from the hospital to their home. She finds a new home that is an exceptional bargain due to the homes past. This home used to be a funeral home and a séance parlor where relatives could contact the dead. Matt decides to live in the basement for privacy (he doesn’t want the family to watch him vomit from treatment) which has an adjacent room that has frosted windows and is locked, Soon Matt starts to see things, are these visions due to house being haunted or is he suffering from the side effects of the treatments he is getting?

The movie is part Ghost story and part mystery. Matt meets Reverend Popescu (Elias Koteas) a fellow patient suffering with cancer who he confides in to find out what is going on in the house and what is causing these strange things to happen. Slowly we find out what strange acts took place and what must be done to rid the house of these spirits.

Virginia Madsen does a great job as the mother she has the right combination of concern for her son without becoming overly hysterical or a cliché. There are some decent scares here, given the rating they are more of the something jumps out of the dark variety but decent none the less. The history of what happened I n the house is played out nicely as well. It is however hard to believe that Matt wants to be in the dingy basement in the first place, even after he starts seeing things he continues to stay there. The locked room in the basement has glass windows yet nobody breaks a window to get in the room, they just look at the locked door and figure they can’t get in. Once they do get into the room and find out what type of room it is, Matt still stays in the basement! No matter what happens Matt stays there and his family lets him. If you can look past that small issue and don’t feel the need to compare it to Amityville Horror or other similar themed films that have come out in the past few years then The Haunting in Connecticut stands on its own and is a fairly enjoyable film.
