ugly truth

Starring:

Gerard Butler, Katherine Heigl, Cheryl Hines, Eric Turner

Director: Robert Luketic

Genre: Romantic Comedy

Rated: R

A television producer looking for love takes tips on how to land the man of her dreams from the host of the morning show she produces.
Gerard Butler and Katherine Heigl star in this low brow attempt at humor in the romantic comedy The Ugly Truth.  Heigl plays Abby a television producer who has been assigned to produce “the ugly truth” a relationship show from a man’s perspective, starring public access host Mike (Gerard Butler). Abby makes a bet with Mike that his advice is not capable of landing her a relationship with her new neighbor Colin (Eric Winter).

The ugly truth is a mess of a film with the biggest offence being its predictability and lack of humor. Gerard Butler does what he can with the role of Mike trying to add some form of humor and charisma to the movie, however he is paired up with Katherine Heigl who has zero star quality and a complete lack of chemistry with Butler. Heigl’s performance is reminiscent of a really bad sitcom with poor over acting and some of the most cringe inducing scenes ever caught on film. Heigl brings a laundry list of awful to every scene but none so as much as in the restaurant; The restaurant scene is pitiful and she is completely unbelievable, with a total lack of sex appeal which the scene desperately requires.

The Ugly Truth tries to be an edgy with an R rating primarily for language, unfortunately it is completely miscast and devoid of humor it does not deliver on any level. With a lack of both romance and comedy the two key ingredients in a romantic comedy this movie is better left for viewing on cable.
