FILM’S STAR PETER SARSGAARD PRESENTED THE FILM WITH A PRESS CONFERENCE DURING THE OPENING NIGHT CEREMONY

QUINTANA ROO, Mexico, (March 10, 2014) – The 2014 Film Festival launched the third edition of the international festival with Kelly Reichardt’s NIGHT MOVESas the opening night film on Sunday, March 9 in Cancun.

Peter Sarsgaard, the star of NIGHT MOVES was present to kick-off the festival with a press conference and an introduction of the film during the opening night ceremony.

The Riviera Maya Film festival was created in 2012 to be the “festival of the people” with the objective to bring Cinema to greater audiences by making it free for the general public. RMFF allows a unique opportunity for the general audience to experience a selection of never before seen and critically acclaimed films from all over the world that have not yet been exposed in Mexico.

With the support of Mr. Roberto Borge, governor of the , and the team of internationally known programmers led by Michael Lipkes and festival director Paula Chaurand, the committee has selected films to expand consciousness and tell humanistic stories.

“I am honored to be at RMFF to present and expose the people of Quintana Roo to the world of cinema that asks interesting questions. Night Moves brings to the table the issue of over-exploitation of natural resources and environmental protection. This subject resonates and matters in a region like this, where you have the privilege of being in an earthly paradise, surrounded by stunning natural beauty. A beauty that must be defended, protected and preserved.” Sarsgaard remarked during the press conference.

NIGHT MOVES, roughly based off of Edward Abbeys’ novel The Monkey Wrench Gang, depicts the story of two radical environmentalists, Dena Brauer (played by Dakota Fanning) and Josh Stamos (Jesse Eisenberg), and their mission to send a message with an act of eco terrorism. The two join forces with an ex-marine, Harmon (played by Peter Sarsgaard), to exploit his knowledge of explosives in order to execute their plan to blow up a hydroelectric dam. The story then delves into their meticulous steps to ensure that the mission runs smoothly. It also features Alia Shawkat in one of the roles, adding to its talented cast. NIGHT MOVES was filmed on location in Oregon, mainly in Medford.

Reichardt is an acclaimed independent film director, and screenwriter, who previously directed WENDY AND LUCY, which appeared on a number of critics’ top ten lists of best films of 2008 including; The New York Times, Newsweek, Entertainment Weekly, and many more. Additionally, the film won Best Picture at the 12thToronto Film Critics Association Awards.

The screenplay was written by Reichardt and Jonathan Raymond, and the production company credits go to Maybach Film Productions, Film Science, Tipping Point Productions, and RT Features. The producers are Saemi Kim, Neil Kopp, Chris Maybach, Anish Saviani, and Rodrigo Teixeira.

Cinedigm has the distribution rights to the film and currently has plans for a U.S. theatrical release date in Spring 2014.

Every year the festival attracts around 20,000 attendees.

The Riviera Maya Film Festival is taking place in Cancun, Puerto Morelos, , and Tulum, from March 9th to the 15th.
