George Clooney’s The Monuments Men at the Berlin Film Festival
- a story about a group of experts in the field of art, hired by the U.S. government in order to recover the stolen Nazi cultural values.
The main claim of the new film by George Clooney, one of the most anticipated prime of the Berlin Film Festival-2014, is simple. It is unclear why such a clever and talented man like Clooney decided to make such a propagandistic film. The ideas clearly promoted in the film are as follows. First, only the U.S. is interested in preserving the cultural heritage of mankind enough to selflessly sacrifice people for the sake of the masterpieces of painting and sculpture, and then unselfishly return them to the country-owners, and not take away overseas. Second, Russians practically didn’t fight as shown in the film, but mostly hunted for German good to take it away in the USSR. Even among German soldiers there are some positive characters in the movie, and none among Russians. Third, the U.S. just made the victory in the war, because while the British figured out with the French who is a hero (it is also presented in the film), the U.S. has effectively conquered Europe back. Fourth and finally, the U.S. is the guarantor of civilization in the world, the country that is willing to do anything to democratic values around the world have been preserved and humanity would be happy, so the best thing that can make all the countries is recognizing paternalistic claims of U.S. fair and gratefully bow to the knees.
There is no gainsaying George Clooney’s humor. Realizing that art history questions are unlikely to be of any value for most viewers of the world, he had made a number of important film moves. Clooney has mixed genres, so the film was a bit of military drama, a little detective story, a bit melodramatic love story, a bit of thriller, a little adventure movie and almost always – a comedy. Clooney also invited starring actors who are not too similar to the scientists, while the roles of these actors also carry a comedy and even farcical features. This is especially true of the Clooney himself, who recalls here the characters he himself often played at Coen brothers with his ridiculous mustache. The very same art part of the plot has been greatly simplified. The works of art are transformed here into typical artifacts for adventurous movie with positive and negative characters fighting for their possession.
