AN INTERVIEW WITH ‘PURE LOVE’ Star MANNY HERNANDEZ
MANNY HERNANDEZ

Manny Hernandez is a familiar face on the small screen – having appeared in the likes of Joey, and a variety of short films – but in 2014 he invades the big screen with no less than four film roles. We spoke to Hernandez about some of these movies, including Pure Love.

What can you tell us about Pure Love?

Pure Love is a twisted story about love, revenge and moving on. A few days before their wedding Eve and Abel hash out a plan to kill off the past by literally killing off four people who’s past actions still impact their present lives.

Who do you play in the film?

I play the role of Abel, who because of his love for Eve is easily manipulated into carrying out the plan of killing Brian, a man from Eve’s past and his ex-girlfriend Amber who’s continuous contact with Abel causes friction between himself and Eve.

Compared to your previous roles, do you consider this a bit of a departure?

It’s different in that most of the roles I’ve played in the past have been more straight forward and you may agree or disagree with the characters actions or discourse but with this guy (Abel) there are times you can agree with his actions even though they may be wrong. Agreeing to kill in the name of love is a twisted thought but so is the thought that some people deserve to die, which is what Abel truly believes.

You’re producing films too now. How has it been wearing two hats?

I feel like producing just came naturally to me. I enjoy being part of the entire process, hate paperwork but at least I always know what’s going on. Working in front and behind the camera allows for me to communicate both with cast and crew in a more inclusive manner. To me it’s important that whatever project I work on, everyone feels like their time and effort is truly appreciated and producing allows for you to build long lasting relationships.

You have several major movies due out this year. Would you consider 2014 your biggest year to date?

Last year was a great year for me, my best productive year that’s for sure. I was very fortunate to be a part of several projects last year and hope it continues to carry’s over to this year as well.

When did you arrive in – and has it been a long journey for you?

I was a late bloomer. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I’d be an actor or have anything to do with making movies, wasn’t even a thought in my mind. Then one day an actor friend of mine, Robert Silvera invited me to his acting class. I had nothing to do so I went and that was it. For the first time in my life I knew what I wanted to do… Can’t really say it’s been a long journey, twelve years in I feel like it’s all still new to me. At times it’s been wonderful or inspiring and like any other career or occupation other times it’s been really challenging and heartbreaking but I know in my heart this is what makes me feel alive.

What is your dream role?

Wow, dream role- Whatever that dream role is it has to have a lot of heart but I can’t really answer that yet. I feel like I’m still in the process of discovering my abilities as an actor. Hopefully when that role comes, I’ll be able to recognize it for what it is and truly be able to enjoy the experience.
