London and New York, Tuesday 3rd September 2013 – VICE today announces the worldwide release of Lil Bub & Friendz, an award-winning, feature-length documentary and the first film to investigate the phenomenon of internet cats and memes, through the tale of Lil Bub’s rise to fame.
Bub, a wide-eyed “perma-kitten”, was born dwarfed and with too many toes, but has nonetheless won the love and attention of the internet with her unique look and inspiring message — one of positivity and giving in the face of hardship and destitution.
Lil Bub & Friendz chronicles Lil Bub’s rescue and journey to stardom, as told by her tattooed owner and best friend, Mike Bridavsky. It’s a classic “boy and his dog” story (only this time it’s a cat).
The documentary also takes on the world of “cat people” at the first-ever Internet Cat Video Film Festival in Minnesota, and explores the virality of YouTube videos and memes fuelling the world’s obsession with cats.
Lil Bub & Friendz premiered at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival in April, winning Best Feature Film in the Tribeca Online Festival, not to mention the heart of the festival’s founder, Robert de Niro.
