The number one rule in a sex comedy is to have sexual hijinx. It’s extremely hard to make a raunchy sex comedy when the star of the film leaves her bra on in every scene or there is a strategically placed piece of furniture covering body parts like a low grade skinemax film. If a member of the cast isn’t game for the film, hire a different actress.
Of course given the bet premise which has been used a million times before, you know how it’s going to play out. When the person finds the romantic partner they are meant to be with they will mention the bet, causing the person to feel betrayed. Both parties will learn from this mistake and be able to profess they truly care to their new partner. Both parties in the bet will get mad at each other from some forced situation but ultimately make up and everyone lives happily ever after.
Since the story is laid out from the word go it’s up to strong performances and laughs to create something unique. The performances are fine except for one the main character Hannah Merideth Forlenza is easily the weakest link. Clearly this role is out of her depth, she should be in an ABC family film not an R rated sex comedy. Hannahs prudishness is understandable in the beginning yet she never grows as a person as her sexual escapades add up. The scene with the Hairy guy is painfully unfunny. On the flip side we have Leslie ( Genevieve Hudson-Price) a pole dancing instructor who meets cute (a meet cute is a lame plot device where two people bump into each other.) with Seth in a bodega shopping for groceries. The relationship with Seth and his Sweet Stache is the best part of the film in a traditional Rom Com way.
A straight to VOD Sex comedy that doesn’t quite nail it in either the Sex or Comedy department. This Ho Phase is a little too prudish for my taste.
