KICK ASS 2 – HOW DO YOU NOT LIKE A MOVIE WHERE THE VILLAIN GOES BY THE MONIKER “THE MOTHERFUCKER”
Kick Ass 2
Starring: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse
Director: Jeff Wadlow
Rated: R

Since the events of the first film, Dave Liweski/Kick Ass (Aaron Taylor Johnson) and Mindy Macready/Hit Girl (Chloe Grace Moretz) are high school students who decide to partner up and form a team to rival Batman and Robin. When Hit Girl is forced into an early retirement, Kickass patrols the streets with a group of costumed vigilantes inspired by his exploits known as Justice Forever.

Hitgirl decides to see what it is like to be a teenage girl in high school. The Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) is seething over Kick Ass blowing up his father with a Bazooka and decides to become the world’s first “Super Villain” known as “The Motherfucker” who assembles a team of baddies to take out Justice Forever and destroy everything that Kick Ass holds dear in his life.

This is the rare sequel that is better than the original, It has every element that made the first so successful with more mature themes (finding your own identity and way in life) as well as plenty of the original’s signature dark  humor.

After watching the documentary “Superheroes” The Justice Forever crew is spot on in the world of costumed crime fighters. The excitement of dressing up and having a great HQ then prowling the streets, is what these guys do. Just like in real life, these costume vigilantes do more community service than crime fighting. It’s only when The Motherfucker starts creating some super villain chaos and hunting down the Justice Forever crew with his league of villains that Justice Forever comes together to earn their super hero moniker.

While there is a cast of new characters all the heavy lifting is done by Kick Ass and Hit Girl While it was great watching a younger Chloe Grace Morentz call some guys cunt’s in the original, watching her get grounded, have a swear jar and navigate High School delivers a much bigger pay off, the “Mean Girls” clique has absolutely no idea who they are messing with.  Little Mindy has definitely grown up. Meanwhile Kick Ass must deal with the repercussions his actions created when he chose to become a real life superhero.

Jim Carrey has gotten a lot of press for his role and refusal to promote, he stars as a former mob enforcer turned born again Christian/Vigilante under the moniker Colonel Stars and Stripes, he made a huge stink claiming to not feel it in his heart to promote this film due to the violence in the wake of the Sandy Hook tragedy. Yet ironically he has no problem contributing towards child death by preaching for parents to not vaccinate their children.  I find his reasoning preposterous, a better reason is that the guy hasn’t made a decent movie since 2004 (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) participating in and promoting one unwatchable shit fest after the next. He doesn’t know how to react being a watchable film.  The entire controversy is all for not as Colonel Stars and Stripes is the weakest character in the film. He is a better fit for “Mystery Men” than for Kick Ass. He is only in the film for about 15 minutes and overstays his welcome by about 13 minutes. His turn as the Colonel is more sketch comedy than actual character.

It’s the combination of real world violence and dark humor that sets this comic book film apart from the rest. While the original became a cult classic this one is poised for mainstream success.

It’s loud, violent, vulgar, funny and smart. A great ride from start to finish.
