As I Lay Dying – James Franco Turns a Classic American Novel Into An Unwatchable Film
As I Lay Dying
Starring: James Franco, ,
Director: James Franco

Clearly Franco fancies himself a modern day renaissance man having Acted, Directed, Screen written, Taught as well as a published author. While the great renaissance men of all time created masterworks Franco is content spreading himself thin.  A vast quantity of work doesn’t make the man.

Faulkner’s master work is consistently listed as one of the best American novels of all time. While the novel is narrated by 15 characters Franco chooses a more traditional mode of storytelling to tell the journey of the deceased Addie Bundren’s family who in hopes of honoring her final wishes, embark to bury her in the nearby town of Jefferson.

Throughout the entire film Franco chooses to utilize a lazy and annoying split screen technique. This at times appears to be a sloppy way of hiding unfilmed dialogue. This split screen effect would work great if you are a fish and can see separate images, unfortunately human eyes work best viewing a single image. It’s distracting, annoying and no amount of quality performances can  overcome it.

This is truly an unwatchable experience.
