There were so many tough periods for people in our history, which had a huge impact on how we think and who we are today. The Second World War and the Nazi Regime are subjects that always bring the pain in people’s hearts. A new movie called “The Book Thief”, written by Markus Zusak and directed by Brian Percival, approaches one of the worst political regimes, in a way no other movie or book does.
It is about a girl and her friend who lived in shadow. She had reminded him how was like to feel the touch of the sun on the skin, and what the air felt like to breathe. It was all happening in Germany, in the time of the Second World War. The girl, named Liesel, was given to adoption, because her mother was a communist. She now found her foster family to start a new life. Her new dad, Hans, played by the Academy Winner Award Geoffrey Rush is a really good man, who teaches Liesel to read, because she is illiterate. He becomes a loving father, developing with her a great father-daughter relationship.
The foster family hides a Jewish boy, called Max, who is played by Ben Schnetzer, risking everything they have. Liesel and Max discover that they have a common love for words and literature, which makes them care about each other like they are brother and sister. The blonde cutie Liesel steals books and brings them all to Max. That is why she is called a book thief. In this way she helps him to keep the hope alive, as the power of words unifies them.
The absolutely amazing cast also includes Emily Watson, who plays Rosa, the foster mother, that in the beginning seems to be cold and distant but later becomes a really kind mother to Liesel. is a total success on the movie market and it makes us feel the terrific story in a kind way, without growing hate in our hearts.
The whole movie teaches us how tolerance and kindness can still be alive, even during one of the worst periods of the people’s life. If you want to see great actors playing captivating roles in a story that will get into your mind for a long time, you must watch The Book Thief. This film is totally going to make one of the top movies of the year.
