SUNDANCE REVIEW: INTERIOR. LEATHER BAR. or what a character in the film refers to as THE FRANCO FAGGIT PROJECT.

Interior. Leather Bar.
Starring: Val Lauren, James Franco, Christian Patrick, Travis Mathews.
Directors: James Franco, Travis Mathews

James Franco and Travis Mathews decide to recreate 40 minutes of lost footage that were cut out of the film Cruising.

What starts out as a behind  the scenes process of recreating lost footage soon turns into something completely else, part documentary, part behind the scenes look and part filmed footage.  Interior Leather Bar is hard to describe. Franco and Mathews utilize the opportunity to recreate a scene of Pacino (Val Lauren) in a gay BDSM club that was cut by the ratings board. In the film Pacino is supposed to be uncomfortable as a straight man infiltrating the Gay scene. This is the jumping off point to really explore how young up starting actor Val reacts as a straight man being on set and partaking in a gay scene at a club.

Franco utilizes Vals experience  to explore what he thinks shouldn’t be exploitation and instead should be a tool for bringing new stories to the screen. Disgusted with how violence is acceptable but Gay love and Porn are deemed too hot to handle. Thought provoking, shocking yet not filmed in an exploitative way this isn’t a film for everyone. Including full on male felatio, Interior. Leather Bar.  features the most hardcore scenes to be filmed since the Brown Bunny.

Franco once again proves why he is a darling of the Gay community fearlessly showing alternative lifestyles without any regard or concern for the repercussions; he filmed this while filming the Disney Film OZ the Great and Powerful, Franco and Mathews show a lot of  balls both on and off screen.
