Tricked: A Feature Documentary

A film by Jane Wells and John-Keith Wasson

Tricked takes an inside look into the lives of Sex Traffickers, Pimps, Johns and Police and the 87 million dollar a day sex industry.

The premise of Tricked is very intriguing filmed over the course of three years with the cooperation of police in Denver and Las Vegas we are supposed to see an inside look into the world of Sex Trafficking through all angles.

I was anticipating an inside look into how woman are brought into this world and how the police try to stop a fight they cannot win. If you are looking for an unbiased expose this is not the film. Refusing to even call the woman prostitutes this heavy handed film uses the term Sex Slave to describe woman in the industry.

The view that is on display is that the majority of the people in this industry are forced or coerced as unwilling participants. There is zero mention of out of the country woman brought in and forced to work instead it focuses on woman who are incapable of making good choices.

One example is Danielle Douglas a woman who in college says that she went to a party that her friends were supposed to be at, when she arrived nobody was there except one man who she decided to go out with. After dinner he started buying her lavish gifts which kept her coming back for more, once greed had her on the hook the boyfrined decided to beat the crap out of her and force her to be a prostitute Sex Slave. She then claims how she was arrested over 50 times moved states with her “pimp” and even to Canada before finally leaving.

Another is a young overweight girl with gut meat hanging out under her shirt who left her home and travelled to Vegas to be a model but was instead turned into a Sex Slave. I felt bad for her, that she was so delusional that even though she had zero chance of even being a hand model she fell for the line.

We are introduced to a few Pimps who come off as charismatic yet ridiculous clowns. These guys explain how they take a girl in give her a taste of the good life and then turn them out. If you see a middle aged black man in a suede and velvet suit rolling in a stretch limo with a handful of skanks and a giant Pimp Cup that would make lil John blush its best to keep walking.  He does not have your best intentions in mind.

The thing that Tricked keeps describing are the dregs of the industry, there was a real opportunity to focus on people actually working to give an inside look into how exploitive the industry can be. To show international human trafficking where people are brought in to the country and held against their will to perform sexual acts, instead of a couple of woman with poor decision making skills.

As the film went on I became less and less sympathetic to the characters. There reality looked to be based on a cycle of poor decision making more than anything else. To me there is a huge difference between an adult woman’s choices and a minor’s choices yet this film lumps them all together, everyone is a victim. Tricked is so one sided and heavy handed that any positive message is lost by refusing to acknowledge personal accountability. A quality premise ultimately squandered.
